Boy dies in fall from bridge at entrance to Brighton Marina

Firefighters rescued a dog from the sea after it went over the sea wall at Brighton Marina early this morning (Wednesday 31 May).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 6.03am Roedean firefighters were mobilised to Brighton Marina after a dog was reported to be in the sea after going over the Marina wall.

“Firefighters rescued the dog using water safety equipment.”

A few hours earlier a fire crew put out a van fire after a night of false alarms.

The fire service said: “At 4.18am Brighton firefighters were sent to New England Road, in Brighton, following reports of a van on fire.

“Breathing apparatus was used by the firefighters to tackle the fire using 1-in-7 foam.”

The false alarms last night (Tuesday 30 May) included four in Brighton and Hove.

  • At 7.18pm Brighton firefighters were sent to Cannon Place, in Brighton, due to a fire alarm sounding as a result of a system fault.
  • At 8.45pm Brighton firefighters attended an incident which transpired to be an intruder alarm, mistaken for a fire alarm, at a property in Preston Road, Brighton.
  • At 11.02pm firefighters were sent to a property in Tisbury Road, Hove, after reports of smoke in a laundry area which turned out to be steam and not a fire.
  • At 11.39pm an appliance was sent to Stapley Road, in Hove, for what turned out to be a false alarm.
  • The fire service said: “False alarms divert our crews from real emergencies.

“If you have an alarm, you can help reduce false alarms.

“Remember, fire alarm systems are there to alert occupants to the fact that there may be a fire and, depending on your fire risk assessment and emergency plans, it is normally appropriate to investigate first and only to call the fire service if (or) when there are any signs to indicate that there is actually a fire.

“If you have an automatic alarm system, make sure it is installed properly, that you know how it works and it is serviced regularly by a competent person.

“Best practice requires that false alarms are logged and investigated so that any patterns and trends are identified and dealt with.

“Be aware that steam and dust can trigger alarms and take precautions when possible.

“Ensure staff and/or residents know what to do when the alarm goes off.

“If you do have a fire, please call 999 immediately. Please do not put yourself at risk and only attempt to use any extinguisher if trained and it is safe to do so.”
