Dorothy Stringer head speaks of his pride in pupils’ GCSE performance

The head teacher of Dorothy Stringer School has spoken of his pride in his pupils’ GCSE performance.

Richard Bradford praised students, staff and parents as the school reported that 90 per cent of students achieved grade 4 or above in English and 76 per cent achieved grade 4 or above in maths.

The proportion achieving grade 4 or above in both maths and English was 75 per cent.

The school said that more than 30 per cent of grades were A or A* or their equivalent – and the school achieved an Attainment 8 score of 52.95 (for links to an explanation of Attainment and Progress 8 scores, see below).

And the school added: “We also saw a significant improvement in the progress of disadvantaged students, which has been a key priority for us this year.”

Mr Bradford said: “We are delighted with the success of our students in this year’s GCSE examinations.

“In a period of transition and uncertainty for GCSE examinations, the results reflect the hard work of our students and staff.

“I am once again very proud of our students. They have been a fantastic year group who have worked incredibly hard and challenged themselves to do their very best.

“I am delighted that students of all abilities are celebrating excellent personal academic achievements in their exams today.

“I would like to thank the staff and parents who have done so much to support the students over the last few years.

“I know that because of this support the students have achieved much more than academic success and leave school well equipped to take on the challenges they will face in the years ahead.

“Brighton and Hove schools have worked as a partnership over the last few years, with staff at all levels working together across the city to challenge each other and to share best practice.

“This has clearly already had a positive impact on results and we look forward to continuing to work together to improve outcomes for the children in our city.”

The Department for Education website includes an explanation of the new GCSE grading system and a visual guide.

It also includes details about the Attainment 8 and Progress 8 measures here and here.
