One of Brighton’s most popular secondary schools is to consider becoming an academy.
Varndean School governors and head teacher William Deighan took the decision at a meeting yesterday (Wednesday 16 March).
Mr Deighan and Ray Gold, the chairman of governors, issued a joint statement, saying: “Varndean is a good and improving school with outstanding features, which under current legislation affords us the opportunity to consider academy status.
“At a meeting on 16 March the governing body decided to express an interest in becoming an academy in order to explore the choices open to the school.
“An expression of interest does not necessarily mean that we will become an academy, but will provide the school with the opportunity of considering the future better.
“We will, of course, consult fully with students, staff and families.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with our primary and secondary school colleagues, as well as the local 6th form colleges and universities.”
Millionaire businessman Rod Aldridge has sponsored academies at Falmer and Portslade, with Portslade due to re-open as an academy in September.
