The A27 Brighton bypass has reopened in time for the evening rush hour after a suspected drink driver crashed into a lamppost and the central reservation at Hangleton.
The road was closed for three hours while investigators worked, the wreckage of the man’s car was removed, other debris was cleared – including the damaged lamppost – and the central barrier repaired.
Sussex Police said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a single-vehicle collision on the A27 at Hangleton.
“At about 11.43am on Wednesday 28 February, a car travelling westbound collided with the central reservation and a lamppost, causing it to fall across the carriageway.
“Sections of both carriageways were temporarily closed while emergency services were in attendance and diversions were put in place for motorists.
“The scene was cleared and both carriageways full reopened by 3pm.
“A 48-year-old man from Horley in Surrey has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
“He was taken to hospital as a precaution. However, no injuries were reported.
“He has been released under investigation.”
