Brighton revellers witness high octane performance from five living Dolls

THE SEX P*SSED DOLLS – CONCORDE 2, BRIGHTON 6.4.18

The lucky punters at the Concorde 2 concert venue on Brighton seafront were treated to an outlandish display of punk pomp this evening.

The all-female all-action band The Sex P*ssed Dolls were in town as part of their 2018 ‘Psycho Tour’ and everyone was gonna know about it. The ladies exploded onto the scene late 2014 and have been wowing audiences and festival goers with their edgy cover performances of classic rock and punk anthems mixed in with a smattering of their own original material.

The much photographed five band members are like an all girl version of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Their stage names rather give away the bands ethos, they are Nancy Doll (vocals), Kitty Vacant (guitar), Connie Rotter (guitar), Jilly Idol (bass) and Anna Key (drums).

Due to the nature of their energetic shows and stunning image, these rock chicks have been in much demand and they even accepted an invitation to perform at The Formula One British Grand Prix. Last year they courted the main stage audience at the Isle Of Wight Festival and this year will be the subject of a film about women in rock dealing with a male dominated business.

If feels like only a matter of time until they crash through the mainstream barriers in order to become even more successful. Bands like the SPD will certainly be massive in Japan due to their looks and sounds and are arguably one of the most entertaining live acts to emerge from these shores in the last twenty years.

Tonight, they Dolls were planning on playing an impressive 24 song set, but I suspect due to time constraints that a few of these got dropped.

They opened proceedings with their version of the Dead Kennedys classic ‘California Über Alles’ and went on to perform ‘Psycho Killer’ by The Talking Heads, ‘Hanging On The Telephone’ by Blondie, ‘God Save The Queen’ by The Sex Pistols and ‘Swords Of A Thousand Men’ by Tenpole Tudor.

The majority of their set was punk classics like those above and also ‘Teenage Kicks’ by The Undertones, ‘New Rose’ by The Damned and ‘White Riot’ by The Clash.

The ladies did however expand their repertoire away from punk to include the grunge classic ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana, the chart friendly ‘Message In A Bottle’ by The Police, the goth anthem ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ by The Cult and the rappy ‘Fight For Your Right (To Party)’ by The Beastie Boys.

But the surprise selection of the evening for me was the inclusion of ‘Common People’ by Pulp, which seemed a bit outside of what you would have expected, although I must say that I enjoyed it.

The best tracks performed tonight for me personally were ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ by The Ramones and ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)’ by The Buzzcocks, which incidentally was the track that put me onto the SPD’s.

However the absolute top top number that they absolutely nailed this evening as their cover of Stiff Little Fingers classic ‘Alternative Ulster’.

If you were unlucky enough to have missed this evening’s performance, then you are in luck as the girls are returning back to Brighton later this year in July, as they are the headlining act on Saturday 7th for the Music Mania Festival held at Brighton RFC on Waterhall Road. I go

I Hadn’t seen them before and they were worth the wait. They totally smashed it. Great review although I loved the Nirvana track the best. To be honest I loved it all.
