Brighton athlete Charlie Da’Vall Grice has made it through to the 1,500 metres final at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

He spent the early part of the race at the back of the pack during a fairly slow first lap.

The 24-year-old appeared to be boxed in on the second lap and as he approached the halfway stage.

But by the bell he was in a better position – in third – and, as a front pack of six raced for the line, he managed to hold off the challengers to fill the fourth and final automatic qualifying place.

Da’Vall Grice, a former Cardinal Newman pupil who runs for Phoenix in Brighton, finished comfortably in 3 minutes 47.19 seconds.

The Olympic finalist was less than half a second behind the Kenyan athlete Elijah Manangoi who finished first in their heat in 3:46:82.

The final is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday 14 April).

In the rhythmic gymnastics ball final, Hannah Martin was in the silver medal spot after her routine and in the bronze medal position with just two gymnasts to go.

She could only look on as both outscored her. The 15-year-old from Hove finished fifth.
