Labour trio complain about travellers in Coldean

Three weeks after a court ruled that a travellers’ camp in Brighton should be evicted, three Labour councillors are complaining that they are still causing a nuisance.

The three councillors have written to John Barradell, the chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council, to demand immediate action.

Pat Hawkes, Jeane Lepper and Christine Simpson, who represent Hollingdean and Stanmer on the council, said that they had previously complained about the noise and unsightliness of the camp.

And they said that the Conservative-led council had spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money on legal fees in relation to the camp but had not enforced the removal of the travellers.

The new age travellers are pitched near Varley Halls, the Brighton University halls of residence off  Coldean Lane, Coldean.

The Labour councillors said that local people thought their problems were over when the travellers lost their appeal to stay, at Brighton County Court, nearly three weeks ago.

Councillor Hawkes said: “Three weeks ago we thought we had our community back but the travellers are still here.

“Why are the council not doing anything about it?

“This beautiful open space is valued by the people of Coldean and I have collected dozens of witness statements from residents complaining about this unauthorised encampment.

“There is noise nuisance and there is fly-tipping.

“Quite frankly it is antisocial to be that close to homes and not care about or respect people.

“Not only is this delay deeply unpleasant for local residents, but it is simply a waste of taxpayers money to pay for legal action which doesn’t get used.”

ohh wow the traveling community are back in brighton Wild Park in Moulsecoomb i wonder if it was money issues that mean that little preventative bump hump along Wild Park in Moulsecoomb , its going to cost the council a lot more now to remove them / clear up after the travelers have gone ..
