Brighton MP steps in to help save student bursaries

Trainee teachers at Brighton University will benefit from lobbying by a committee of MPs which includes the Member for Brighton Kemptown Simon Kirby.

The students, who will start on a design and technology postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) course in September, will now receive bursaries.

They are currently undertaking subject knowledge enhancement courses to prepare them for their PGCE.

But the students at Brighton and four other universities were unsure whether they would be able to complete their training.

Mr Kirby sits on the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee which wrote to Education Secretary Michael Gove about the issue.

Mr Kirby said: “I am delighted to receive news that the Secretary of State has confirmed that bursaries for the 51 students will be provided for the second year of their course which starts in September.

“I am sure this news will be welcomed by the University of Brighton students who were uncertain about whether they would be able to complete the course.

“My colleagues and I on the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee wrote to Michael Gove in April regarding this issue.

“It is great that the Secretary of State has listened to our views and acted so swiftly.”
