Fewer people claim dole in Brighton and Hove

Unemployed claimant count rises slightly in Brighton and Hove

The number of people claiming the dole has fallen across Brighton and Hove, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS said that the claimant count totalled 6,396 in April in the three parliamentary constituencies covering Brighton and Hove.

The claimant count is usually lower than the number of people who are unemployed because not everyone without a job is entitled to jobseeker’s allowance.

And the Brighton Kemptown constituency extends beyond the Brighton and Hove City Council boundary.

The figures released today show a drop of 112 claimants compared with March and 1,193 compared with a year previously in April 2010.

The breakdown is as follows

Constituency April 2011 March 2011 April 2010
Hove 2068 2088 2365
Brighton Pavilion 2113 2187 2669
Brighton Kemptown 2215 2233 2555
Total 6396 6508 7589

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, welcomed news that unemployment has fallen in his constituency.

He said: “I am delighted with this news but there is still a long way to go.

“The coalition government’s policies of creating a rebalanced, stabilised economy are key to improving economic and job opportunities for local people.”
