More students are claiming exemption from paying council tax to Brighton and Hove City Council, leaving a potential £1.1 million shortfall in the council’s finances.
And a growing number of discounts are being claimed for unfurnished vacant properties.
The two trends are placing extra pressure on the city’s budget, the council’s cabinet member for finance, Councillor Jason Kitcat, told colleagues yesterday (Thursday 14 July).
A report to the cabinet said that council tax collection rates were above target so far this year.
Inspectors will be asked to look into the situation.
Councillor Kitcat also set out a number of other financial challenges to the council’s budget but reassured colleagues that steps were being taken to manage the risks.
