Brighton’s Carnival Collective Sweeps to Victory!

In an epic battle of the bands that saw 10,000 people cast votes for their choice to play the main stage at the Soundcrash Funk and Soul Weekender, Brighton’s favourite Big Band won the day. Carnival Collective, the unique genre-blending percussion brass and bass band which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, saw off competitors Chloe Bodur, Xidus Pain, Kit Sebastian, and Soul Grenades in a nail biting contest, with only around 300 votes between CC and Soul Grenades at the finish.

The prize is a slot on Sunday evening, supporting huge names such as Gilles Peterson, Jordan Rakei, Maribou State and Kamasi Washington, playing on Brighton beach May 19th. With the band releasing a brand-new Latin-meets-DrumNBass track, Suerte, on 1BTN today to celebrate, it promises to be a set to get the pebbles jumping.

Carnival Collective evolved from a street samba band to its current incarnation of brass, bass, keys, lush vocals and massed Brazilian percussion section, and has played venues and stages from Brighton Pride to Glastonbury over the years, always in its trademark pink and bahama blue – and lots of glitter. Blending hiphop, funk, Latin, ska, drum n’ bass and dub, they have a loyal army of fans who showed up to ensure the band swept to victory.

You can catch them this month at The Haunt, April 26, where they’ll be supported by quirky Afro-Funk favourites King Lagoon’s Flying Swordfish Dance Band. Bound to be a sell-out – get your tickets here!
