People from Brighton and Hove recognised in Queen’s birthday honours list

A former Brighton and Hove Albion footballer has been made an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Chris Ramsey

Chris Ramsey – now technical director at Queen’s Park Rangers – was honoured for services to football and diversity in sport.

The 57-year-old former defender joined Brighton in 1980 when they were in the old First Division – now the Premier League – appearing 30 times for the club in four years.

He played in the FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley in 1983 but missed the replay because of injury.

A year later the young right-back left for Swindon Town where he played a hundred games in three seasons and scored five goals.

Since then he has managed the England Under-20 side, coached at Tottenham Hotspur and took over for a while at QPR where he is now technical director.

Rambo said: “I am quite in shock if I’m being honest.

“I have been in football for 41 years and have managed to touch every part of the game – grassroots, youth, women’s football, disability football, as well as at all first team levels. That means a lot to me.

“The diversity part is something that is close to my heart. I think it’s very important that we realise there are still areas of diversity that need to be looked at in the game.

“I thank all the clubs that I have worked for, especially QPR and also my time at Tottenham, which is where I was really able to cement my reputation.”
