Campaigners lobby for crafts exhibitions at Hove Museum

Campaigners have called for craft exhibitions to be reintroduced at Hove Museum.

A petition signed by 25 people will be presented to Conservative councillor David Smith, cabinet member for culture at Brighton and Hove City Council, at a meeting at 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday 15 June).

The campaigners say the city should do more to showcase the museum’s success as one of only three in the country with a craft collection.

The petition reads: “We the undersigned petition the council to reinstate temporary craft exhibitions at Hove Museum.

“Hove Museum holds one of only three craft collections in the country.

“That temporary exhibitions are to cease at Hove is a great loss to the community and to a city with a strong cultural ethos.

“The exhibitions and related activities inspire creativity at a time when many people have increased leisure time, often against their will.

“Craft is one of the more accessible of the arts and can be challenging, beautiful and humerous.

“This issue needs to be addressed urgently in order to prevent the exhibition space falling into disuse.”

Yes this is very sad. The craft collection in Hove museum is quite outstanding. The Hove area has a many creative local residents. The Museum should be a centre for craft, if anything what happens there should be expanded upon. I expect this move is somehow motivated by money. In the current climate museums everywhere are suffering. The local adult education venue has just closed, I have been to sucessful and exciting events in Hove museum before, it should offer MORE of the day courses in jewellery making, pottery and the like to increase income and keep craft in Hove.
