Portslade Community College to become academy

Portslade Community College looks likely to become an academy school.

One of the sponsors is expected to be the businessman Rod Aldridge, who went to school in Portslade more than 40 years ago.

Mr Aldridge, 62, is the main sponsor of the Falmer Academy, which is due to open in September as the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy.

The proposed academy for Portslade will place a question mark over the future of new head teacher Stuart McLaughlin.

Mr McLaughlin was the head teacher at Falmer High School but he moved across to Portslade after he lost the contest for the top job at the proposed Falmer Academy.

He earned a good reputation with the improvements that he made at Falmer High and has already made a positive impression at Portslade.

One governor said: “I’m not happy about this. The head teacher is new and is doing a good job. He should be given time to prove himself.”

The other sponsors – apart from Mr Aldridge, the multimillionaire founder of outsourcing business Capita – are expected to be Sussex University and Brighton and Hove City Council.

A council spokesperson said: “‘The leader of the council  [Mary Mears] announced at cabinet in December her commitment to first class education in the city. She said the council would explore options for more academies.

“Informal and active discussions have been taking place but there are no firm proposals to share at this stage.”
