Brighton and Hove cycle lane proposal to be scrapped

Brighton and Hove City Council is believed to have dropped plans for a cycle lane along Old Shoreham Road.

The council carried out a public consultation last year but has not published the result.

A majority of respondents were believed to have favoured the cycle route although the design came in for criticism.

The process – including designing the route and consulting the public – is believed to have cost a six-figure sum.

In 2008-09 alone, the council spent £50,000 on the scheme, according to the investigative website What Do They Know?

And one critic of the scheme is Becky Reynolds, of campaign group Bricycles. She said: “The principle of providing better cycling conditions along the Old Shoreham Road is welcomed by Bricycles members, but the proposed plan is deeply flawed due to its discontinuity, the narrowness of facilities, pinch points and inadequate junction treatments.”

The route was intended to run from Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) in Hove to Applesham Way in Portslade.
