Two held over Brighton murder

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 48-year-old man in Brighton.

A 32-year-old man and a woman 33-year-old woman were arrested by police officers in a multi-storey car park in Winchester, Hampshire.

The pair, who come from the Brighton area, were being brought back to Sussex today.

Detectives were due to interview them about the death of Jonathan Ellison, known as Jon, whose body was found just after 2am on Friday 15 April.

Sussex Police also renewed an appeal for four people who may be vital witnesses to come forward.

CCTV images of the four, who are not suspects, were released yesterday (Saturday 16 April).

Post-mortem tests, carried out on Friday, found that Mr Ellison died from several substantial head injuries consistent with being hit by a long blunt instrument.

He also had injuries on his hands which suggest that he tried to defend himself from attack.

Detective Inspector Carwyn Hughes said: “We are still keen to hear from anyone else who was in or around Gloucester Street in the North Laine area of the city centre on Thursday evening or the early hours of Friday morning and who saw anything suspicious.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Jon Ellison , his mum used to run the bar which is now Mrs Fitzherberts . It was used by Argus reporters and actors and actresses playing at the Theatre Royal, he had the upstairs bar called Jon’s Bar. She went on to run the Grey’s and then went to Hastings. He used to go out with Millie , who was Jack Tinkers daughter. This was around 1982-87. He always said he had a North American Indian background, a lovely man

A few of us from John’s bar would be grateful to hear when the funeral is, if we haven’t already missed it. x. bungaroosh@hotmail.com
