Thousands turned out to see the RAC London to Brighton Veteran Car Run today.

More than 500 cars dating from 1894 to 1904 set off from Hyde Park at about 7am to make the journey to Madeira Drive in Brighton.

About 450 completed the 60-mile run, with the first cars reaching Brighton seafront by mid morning and the last one arriving at about 4.30pm.

Former Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell took part along with more than two dozen German drivers who were marking the 125th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz.

The weather this side of the South Downs was dry and chilly.

The event is a re-creation of the Emancipation Run in 1896.

Those taking part were celebrating a change in the law raising of the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph. The law change also ended the requirement for someone to walk in front of a car waving a red warning flag.

The run was re-enacted in 1927 and has been held every year since except during the Second World War.
