Green council sees red over Brighton firm's purple patch

A Brighton estate agent has been ordered to repaint its grade II listed premises.

Bonett’s painted the outside of its offices purple and has been told to turn them back to white or pale cream by Friday 1 June.

Brighton and Hove City Council has served an enforcement notice on the firm in relation to its offices in St George’s Road, Kemp Town.

Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, chairman of the council’s planning committee, said: “The council is committed to conserve our city’s architectural heritage.

“We expect owners of listed buildings to comply with the legal requirement to obtain listed building consent for any works that may affect the special character of their property and have a negative effect on the historic surrounding area.

“Permission is not needed to repaint a building in the existing colour.

“But in this case we have no alternative but to serve an enforcement order on the owner to return the property to its original colour.”

Shopfronts on Listed Buildings are not required to be in keeping with the Listed Building’s architecture, alas. This means the street scene bears no resemblance to what is above ground level shops and cafes! This is quite wrong.

Note that neither of this property’s neighbours has cream shop fronts. So this order only applies to the wall above ground floor level.

    It is illogical.
