One of Brighton’s biggest private sector employers has been recognised for its work with apprentices.
Mears, which employs about 160 staff from its base in Moulsecoomb, was named employer of the year at the regional National Apprenticeship Service awards.
The company has taken on 64 apprentices in the Brighton and Hove area since winning the contract to maintain and repair houses and flats for Brighton and Hove City Council.
All of those who completed their training have gone on to find work either with Mears or another employer, the company said.
Mears will learn whether it has gone on to win the national Employer of the Year award at the Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham on Thursday 14 November.
Councillor Bill Randall, chairman of the council’s Housing Management Consultative Committee, congratulated the company.
He told the committee that Mears had also recently recruited 14 more youngsters and added: “Training more apprentices is very important.”
