Brighton and Hove libraries collected £61,554 in fines last year – or £168.64 a day.
The figure, relating to the 2013-14 financial year, was revealed in a Freedom of Information request made to Brighton and Hove City Council.
Over that time period, just two complaints about fines were made.
The first was a woman who was concerned fines were showing up on her library card when books were returned on time. Librarians investigated, and discovered there were in fact several late returns.
The second was a woman who didn’t realise she was going to be fined for overdue books. The library apologised for not having informed her of this and waived her fines up until that point.
