Cox to stand in Hove for the Conservatives

The Conservatives have picked Graham Cox to stand for Parliament in Hove at the next general election.

The 52-year-old former police chief was chosen at a selection meeting at CCK in Clarendon Villas, Hove, this evening (Wednesday 30 July).

Councillor Cox only became active in party politics three years ago when he retired after 30 years’ service with Sussex Police.

He won a seat on Brighton and Hove City Council in the Westbourne by-election in December 2011.

The party chose him this evening after the sitting MP Mike Weatherley announced, earlier this month, that he would stand down at the general election in May next year. Mr Weatherley won the seat from Labour in 2010.

Councillor Cox, who was born in Portslade, will run against Labour candidate Peter Kyle and Christopher Hawtree, a Green councillor.

Graham Cox has previously said that I shall be the next MP here. I shall not dwell on that (interesting as it is). He and I enjoy talking on doorsteps – in person. Which is where it’s at.

Cameron and the Tories hate the police. Good luck trying to be a Tory MP!

@Christopher Hawtree – Not surprised to see a green councillor that doesn’t understand the concept of irony – did he, by chance also call you a ‘genius’?
