Brighton-born jockey Ryan Moore has won one of the world’s richest races, the Melbourne Cup, on the German horse Protectionist.
The two-mile race brings Australia to a standstill in a similar way to the Grand National in Britain.
Moore, 31, who was brought up in Woodingdean and is the son of trainer Gary Moore, who had stables in Warren Road, pushed the German-trained winner several lengths clear of British hope Red Cadeaux in the final 300 metres.

When I think back to when it all started for Charlie with a couple of horses and now Ryan winning the Melbourne Cup I am sure he could never have imagined it, just goes to show what hard work can do.
