The former Jive Monkey nightclub off Brighton’s Old Steine is expected to reach £325,000 when it goes up for auction next week.
The small club in Steine Street is being marketed as another venue, with an existing late licence until 3am all week, or as a residential conversion.
A planning application to turn it into seven student rooms, submitted last May and supported by the EC Language School, is under consideration.
Another application for seven student rooms made in August 2013 was refused, on the basis the rooms would be too small and dark. A subsequent appeal was dismissed.
The listing on Rightmove states: “The terrace property, formerly trading as ‘The Jive Monkey Theatre and Bar’, has been an established licensed premises for over 30 years.
“Now vacant, the building could be reopened as a club and/or cafe/bar with the benefit of the existing all-week 3am late night licences.
“Alternatively, subject to necessary consents, the property may convert well into two or more flats, a large single dwelling house, offices or possibly a fabulous combination of both residential and the commercial/retail elements.”
Jive Monkey, which hosted live music and caberet, closed in summer 2012. Since then, it has been broken into at least twice, vandalised, and used as a squat.
