Both Brighton universities feature in the top ten in the University Drinking League Table compiled by the Student Beans website.
In second spot Sussex University students were reported to drink an average of 18.2 units of alcohol a week, behind York University students’ 19.7 units – equating to about 10 pints of lager.
Brighton University students were the eighth booziest, with an intake of 14.1 units.
Student Beans said: “The recommended amount of booze for a man to consume per week is no more than 21 units while it is 14 for women.”
The league table was compiled from the results of a survey of 1,649 students about their drinking habits.
Student Beans said: “We learnt that 76 per cent of students would give up drinking if it meant they didn’t have to pay tuition fees and that someone managed to lose over £1,000 worth of stuff when drunk.
“More than twice as many men would label themselves binge drinkers as women – 34 per cent of male respondents versus 15 per cent of female respondents.
“However, on the whole more men do not drink at all.”
Twelve per cent of male students said that they didn’t drink compared with 7 per cent of female students.
Student Beans also said: “Men feel there is greater pressure to drink as part of a uni society.”
