Whitehawk came agonisingly close to winning the Vanarama South play-off semi-final, losing on penalties to Ebbsfleet despite winning the match.

Nick Arnold gave the Hawks a dream start, putting them ahead – and level on aggregate – after just four minutes.

Kenny Clark equalised for Ebbsfleet 20 minutes later.

Just after half time Danny Mills scored his second goal of the tie to put the Hawks 2-1 up and back level on aggregate.

That’s the way it stayed until full time and after the extra half an hour.

There were reports of minor crowd trouble at the Whitehawk end.

On the pitch Ebbsfleet won the tie 4-2 on penalties to set up an all-Kent final against Maidstone United for a place in the Vanarama National League.
