Warning of 70mph gusts issued for this afternoon

A severe weather warning for winds with gusts of up to 70mph possible has been issued this lunchtime for the rest of the afternoon.

Although the likelihood is rated as low, if the winds do reach these speeds, the impact will be high with falling trees and debris a possible danger.

And with high tide at 12.45pm today, it might be wise to avoid the seafront or risk getting wet.

The Met Office warning says: “A brief spell of very strong winds is expected as a line of heavy rain moves eastwards over the UK during Thursday afternoon. Whilst most places will miss the worst a few spots may see gusts in excess of 70 mph.

“Please be aware of a very low likelihood of disruption, primarily to travel, from falling trees and debris.

“An area of rainfall moving eastwards is associated with some very strong and squally winds. The strongest winds are very localised so many places will not see disruption.”
