Firefighters were called out to a chimney fire at a flat in one of Brighton and Hove’s historic squares yesterday evening (Wednesday 21 December).
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 5.26pm Hove firefighters attended a chimney fire at a flat in Brunswick Square, Hove.
“They used a chimney kit and a thermal imaging camera.
“A home safety visit was carried out.
“Chimneys should be swept regularly to ensure they are safe.
“Be careful when using open fires to keep warm.
“Make sure you always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers.
“Ensure the fire is extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.

“At 9.30pm Roedean firefighters were called to Marine Drive, Saltdean. A bonfire had been left to burn unattended.
“A hose reel was used to put it out. Please ensure that you watch over bonfires and have a means of putting them out near by, eg, buckets of water or a hose.”
