i360 shut until Wednesday after data cable snaps

A snapped data cable has stranded the i360 pod until at least Wednesday while specialist replacement parts arrive and are tested.

The pod got stuck on Friday afternoon, when it stopped moving on its descent just after 3pm, leaving passengers inside for about an hour before a controlled descent, and having to use the attraction’s now-famous portable toilet.

This is the fourth time the viewing tower has stopped working, with passengers also left trapped inside for up to two hours when it got stuck three times in four days in September. Then, oversensitive motion detectors were blamed.

This time, the attraction says it will now remain closed until at least Wednesday.

A spokeswoman said: “The i360 will be closed on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February while work is carried out to replace a damaged data ribbon.

“Specialist parts will be arriving on site on Monday. Following a period of testing we hope to re-open on Wednesday 1 March but will confirm this early next week.

“We are contacting all customers who have booked tickets for Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February and offering them alternative flights or refunds. We would like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
