Albion lead through a Glenn Murray penalty on 14 minutes. Jack Colback was adjudged to have held back Sam Baldock.

Bruno saw a fine shot saved by Karl Darlow just prior to this.

Albion almost got a second when a training ground move saw Anthony Knockaert loft the ball over the Newcastle wall only for Baldock to slightly miscue and fire over.

Murray then saw a half volley acrobatically saved by Darlow.

Newcastle’s best chance fell to Christian Atsu and was fantastically pushed away by David Stockdale.

Newcastle fans Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly told Brighton and Hove News that they hoped the Geordies could make a second-half comeback.
