Winter was dry but Southern Water says we’re safe from a hosepipe ban – for now

Southern Water chief promises better performance after watchdog’s report about complaint numbers

The winter months were drier than average but recent rainfall has meant that a hosepipe ban is looking unlikely at the moment.

Southern remains keen to encourage people to use water wisely as it keeps a watching brief on supply levels.

The company said: “The winter of 2016-17 was drier than average, with Met Office figures showing the south east received only 77 per cent of normal rainfall.

“This means there are lower water levels across our regional water sources than in previous years.

“Rainfall during January, February and March has helped, with groundwater levels up as a result.

“This is important as 70 per cent of the water we supply comes from underground sources. River levels also increased, allowing us to pump some of this water into our key reservoir at Bewl, which is on the Kent / East Sussex border.

“Despite the dry winter, we don’t believe we will need to take measures, such as introducing Temporary Use Bans, previously known as hosepipe bans, in our water supply areas this spring and summer.

“We’re continuing to monitor the situation closely, with clear plans in place to make sure we’re fully prepared, should the relatively dry weather continue in the months ahead.

“This includes building on our ongoing campaign to encourage and support our customers to save water, energy and money – providing them with a wide range of water-efficiency advice.

“For example, qualifying households can take advantage of free water-efficiency home visits where our specialist staff will install water-saving products at no cost to customers and provide tips on how to make savings.

“Further details are available on our website at www.southernwater.co.uk/savewater.

“Of course, we’re also continuing to tackle leakage on our 13,700km network of water mains and ensuring we’re making the best use of our regional water sources.”

Southern Water’s top tips for saving water, energy and money include the following
• Only wash full loads in your washing machine or dishwasher
• Use a bucket and sponge to wash your car rather than a hose-pipe
• Have a four-minute shower instead of a bath
• Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
• Instal a water butt to collect rainwater for watering your garden (see our website for discounted products)
• Water your garden early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler
