When Smith did score – and the next Albion goal wins it

Almost 34 and a half years since Gordon Smith’s goal at Norwich on Saturday 14 May 1983, no Seagulls player has scored a top flight goal.

The next Albion scorer will become the first ever in the Premier League and the first for a generation.

Some 270 minutes have elapsed this season without an Albion goal, with Tomer Hemed and Anthony Knockaert, who both hit the woodwork at Watford, coming closest to breaking the duck.

Albion start the match with a goal difference of minus four but are just one place behind once mighty Arsenal.

Gary Stevens of course scored at Wembley a week later back in 1983, when the Albion could still be just about considered at top flight team. But let’s not take away the accolade from the frequently apologetic Smith.

The Seagulls take on West Bromwich Albion at the Amex today (Saturday 9 September) in the Premier League.
