Crash closes A23 on the edge of Brighton just before rush hour

An urgent investigation has been launched after a teenager died after being hit by a night bus in the early hours of this morning on Brighton seafront.

The accident happened just before 1am on the A259 Marine Parade near the junction with Burlington Street.

A police spokeswoman said: ”

Emergency services were called to the scene in Marine Parade, close to the junction with Burlington Street at 12.51am.

“The 15-year-old boy from Brighton was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, but was declared dead at 1.19am. His family has been informed.

”

The road was closed to enable collision investigation work to take place and a contraflow remained in place on Saturday morning.

“Any witnesses are asked to contact the serious collision investigations unit by calling 101 and quoting Operation Rivington.”

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove Buses said: “Last night a terrible accident occurred involving one of our buses. A pedestrian – just a young teenager – was struck by a bus just before 1 a.m.

“It happened on the A259 coast road near Burlington Street in Brighton on the westbound carriageway. This poor young lad tragically died in hospital later.

“We are all extremely shaken and saddened by this awful news. Our thoughts are with his family and friends who will be absolutely devastated.

“We have begun an urgent investigation into this terrible incident and are supporting the police in their accident investigation.

“The police have taken the bus for examination as is the requirement for such serious accidents and the CCTV footage of the incident will be carefully reviewed.

“Our driver is distraught. We’re giving him our complete support during this dreadful time for all concerned.”

What an awful thing to say. If you can spare a thought for his parents then perhaps you can imagine their suffering rather than saying something so utterly crass.
