Supermarket chain bans couples from shopping together

Woman refused morning-after pill she’d paid for because of pharmacist’s ‘personal reasons’

Sainsbury's in Lewes Road

One of the biggest supermarket chains in the country has today banned couples from shopping together as part of its coronavirus “social distancing “ measures.

Sainsbury’s announced its extra restriction today, going above and beyond the rules brought in by the government.

Children will, however, not be affected by the rule change.

The company, which has more than half a dozen stores across Brighton and Hove, said: “We have queuing systems in place outside stores and ask you to please queue at a safe distance of two metres apart.

“Please also try to keep a safe distance from other customers and from our colleagues when you are doing your shop.

“We have placed clear markings on shop floors to help you know what a safe distance is.

“From today, we are asking everyone to please only send one adult per household to our shops.

“This helps us keep people a safe distance apart and also helps to reduce queues to get into stores.

“Our store teams will be asking groups with more than one adult to choose one adult to shop and will ask other adults to wait.

“Children are of course welcome if they are not able to stay at home.”

More irresponsible are the older couple I just saw today at Sainsburys New England Street with matching backpacks who stood together until they got to the sign saying one person per household, then stood at separate floor markers until they went in!

Totally and utterly irresponsible. Everyone saw them do it.

So what about the disabled and their carers? Shopping alone is impossible for my elderly parents

I think it’s a very good idea why buy twice as much just so you can throw half away

Sainsbury’s Lewes road is a joke outside perfect
    inside should be more organized
People are not respecting people’s space
there to busy on mobile telephones and just gorpping and standing still and kids are not being supervised

More comments here that appear to have strayed from the Argus. Monitoring is needed.

Good idea…except I saw people in Sainsbury’s today buying one hyacinth plant.
I guess they must have really needed it.

Very wise choice; Waitrose has a much nicer selection of food and their every-day items are price matched with Tesco’s.

Have you ever tried to eat a Sainsbury’s Sausage roll? It is similar to eating a rock solid frozen turd; tasteless and impossible.

Tesco at Holmbush is very well organised and I have either been able to go straight in or only had to queue for a very short time. Staff are very friendly and helpful, cleaning trolleys as one goes in, and spraying one’s hands with sanitiser. Fortunately it is very large and spacious with a one way system to avoid gridlock in the aisles (although this does not seem to stop stupid people from standng chatting to one another).

How different from the tiny Co-op at the Seven Dials, where it is impossible to keep more than a couple of feet away from other shoppers or staff working there.
