Two schoolgirls charged after man suffers serious head injuries in Brighton attack

The crime scene at Castle Square in Brighton

A 15-year-old girl has been sent to prison for 12 months for a savage attack on a council worker near Pavilion Gardens.

The Brighton girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was one of three teenagers who approached street cleaner Darren Hoad shortly before 6am on 16 September last year.

CCTV footage showed Mr Hoad, who is in his 50s, being pursued into Castle Square as one of the girls swung punches, causing him to fall to the ground.

He was then further assaulted by kicks to the body and head, before members of the public stepped in to help.

The attack, which was unprovoked, left him with serious injuries.

All three suspects were arrested by police nearby shortly after, based on descriptions given by witnesses.

The Brighton girl and a 16-year-old girl, also from Brighton, were charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 16-year-old was also charged with assaulting PC Johnson.

On Wednesday, the pair were sentenced at Brighton Magistrates Court.

The 15-year-old girl was sentenced to 12 months in prison, to run concurrently with a four-month sentence currently being served for a separate assault in Brighton on 28 December, 2020.

The 16-year-old was given a 12-month youth offending order and remanded into the care of social services.

Detective Constable Victoria Thornton-Green said: “This was a violent, unprovoked attack that left the victim with serious injuries.

“As a force we remain committed to tackling youth violence in Sussex, through convictions such as these and by working with our partners in the community to tackle the root causes of this behaviour.

“We would also like to thank the victim, his family and the witnesses who supported our investigation and helped bring these perpetrators to justice.”

Should have been consecutive sentence not concurrent.

For some unfathomable reason, ‘they’ never seem to do consecutive sentences, so these people can do whatever they do multiple times and get just one sentence to cover all of it. Apart from the fact that the sentence is a joke in the first place and they generally get out ahead of time.
