Middle Street Primary School

Brighton’s oldest school is holding a “day of action” and wants parents and supporters to roll their sleeves up in all manner of ways.

The school said: “On Saturday 29 November at 9.30am, Middle Street Primary School will be holding a day of action.

“Our school is such a special place and this day is all about coming together to show it the love and care it deserves.

“We’re inviting people from our school community – and beyond – to join us for a day of teamwork and creativity.

“Whether you can build, fix, clean, paint, create displays or offer any other skills, we’d love for you to be involved.

“Unfortunately, children will not be able to attend due to workmen being on site.

“If you know any local businesses who could donate items, we would be very grateful. We are looking for

  • paint
  • tools
  • food for our workers

“It will be a fantastic opportunity to make a hands on difference, meet other families and take pride in the space our children learn and play in every day.”

To volunteer or make a donation, contact the school on 01273 323184 or admin@middlestreet.brighton-hove.sch.uk.

The school can trace its history back about 200 years but, more recently, has faced a number of challenges including financial.

But the school’s new – and experienced – interim leadership team Rachel Kershaw and Michelle May believe that the school is entering an “exciting phase”.

The school said: “Both bring deep expertise and a passionate belief in the power of community-driven education.

“Working alongside a dynamic interim executive board (IEB), they are steering Middle Street into a new era of confidence, stability and opportunity.

“To reaffirm the community’s commitment to building and growing this cherished local school, Rachel and Michelle are proud to announce a ‘day of action’ – a moment for families, staff and the wider Brighton community to come together in support of Middle Street’s bright future.”

Already, those signing up to help on Saturday include colleagues, staff, governors, PTA members, workmen and even head teachers from other schools.

Mrs Kershaw, the head teacher at St Margaret’s Primary School, Rottingdean, said: “For generations, Middle Street has stood as a beacon of creativity and inclusion in the centre of Brighton.

“The ‘day of action’ is our opportunity to honour that legacy – to come together, roll up our sleeves and make sure this unique school continues to thrive for years to come.”

Michelle May said: “Everything we do is about giving our children the best start possible – rooted in the values of community, curiosity and care.

“The ‘day of action’ is a celebration of hope and progress and a reminder that, together, we can shape a bright future for Middle Street and everyone connected to it.”

Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven MP Chris Ward praised the appointment of Mrs Kershaw at Middle Street, saying that he was “delighted to congratulate Rachel on her new appointment as interim executive head teacher at Middle Street Primary School, in Brighton”.

Mr Ward said: “Her track record at St Margaret’s speaks for itself and I know she’ll bring the same commitment, energy and focus to her new role.”

The school also has open days coming up at 9.30am on Wednesday 3 December and Friday 9 January.
