Greens and Labour take different stance on park and ride

A Volvo driver has landed himself with a court bill of almost £3,000 after driving at over twice the limit in Brighton.

Richard Yassin, 54, was flagged by police for driving with no insurance in Mill Road on Sunday, 1 February.

When officers pulled him over, they were hit by a strong smell of alcohol, so out came the breathalyser too.

He was found to have 67 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml breath in his system; almost twice the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

Yassin, of Plumpton Lane, Plumpton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court on 24 March, where he pleaded guilty to two charges, one of drink driving and one of driving with no insurance.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined £1,920 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £768 and costs of £85, bringing the total court bill to £2,773.

Standard today in Britain, a separate traffic police unit UK wide would clear most of these issues and make the roads safer, a lot of money would be generated until drivers wise up then the unit could adjust manpower as needed. I’d say 3-4 years before some people would get sensible.

The level of stupidity is amazing. How does anyone ever think drinking and driving can ever be ok, sensible, or acceptable. Now we have drug driving. Find it hard to understand there are even some levels of acceptable for that. My way would be immediate ban. Permanently disquification.. end of licence. Then maybe people might think more than twice, before driving whilst impaired, and incapable.Think car. Think lethal weapon.

Agreed. Especially since it is almost always a considered action. DUI has always included drugs, and I think even if this is on the harsher scale of punishments for this type of crime, many are going to consider this too lenient.

Shame his name wasn’t Katie Price – he’d have gotten away with a £100 fine.
