Bus crash blocks narrow Brighton street

A bus and car crashed this morning (Wednesday 1 July), blocking a narrow street in the heart of Brighton.

The crash happened as the 3X was turning into Trafalgar Street from Whitecross Street and the double-decker appeared to be embedded in Fossick Wares, a shop on the corner of Tidy Street.

Witnesses said that the accident caused queues of traffic in all directions, with the road closed at about 11.40am and reopened about an hour later.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines to the scene and said: “We were called at 11.40am to reports of a bus colliding with shop in Trafalgar Street.

“There are no reports of injuries and everyone is safely off the bus. Please avoid the area.”

Later the fire service issued an update, saying: “Crews on scene have confirmed the road traffic collision was at the junction with Whitecross Street.

“One car and one double-decker bus were involved. The bus also collided with the shop but damage to the building is minimal.

“We handing the incident over to Sussex Police.”

The force said: “Anyone with any information can report it online or call 101, quoting serial 720 of 01/07.”

Change the route. Send it up Church Street, Spring Gardens and North Road to Queens Road.

Why have the pavements and road corners been built out so far? This is council negligence and accidents waiting to happen.

Because it’s where people walk !

No, it’s unnecessary and dangerous alterations to the road. I watched a car got the wrong side of an island junction Old Shoreham Road / Drive – right hand turn East up last Cardinal Newman. The altered junction means people turning right have to turn 200degress.

Keep the big buses on the main roads out of the smaller streets and use smaller mini bus types to run about in between, probably cheaper to buy and maintain as well.

Think that 3X route is popular but bring back those little buses that used to do the No7 route years ago-busy bees they were called.

So nothing to do with the size or length of the bus then? But rather a mistake made by a driver?

Not a great area for vehicles either, I’d be bold and say should we see more pedestrianisation and access-only on those particular roads?

This was an accident waiting to happen. The junction reproving across the city is completely inappropriate and that’s too tight a turn for a long double decker. A prime example is the turn left out of Grange Close into the A23 Preston Road – I contacted the council and highways when this was at the drawing stage and said the turn was too tight and would make vehicles turn into the path of oncoming traffic or larger vehicles such as dust carts to cut the corner and damage the kerbs. I was told this had “been accounted for”. Had it hell – it’s dangerous! Trevor Muten and his anti-car policy has resulted in a road that is too narrow and is blocked as soon as buses stop due to the “island bus stops”. It’s happening all over the city and it needs reviewing.

Got to be the Height of the bus surely, and those corners tricky.
Tbh it’s the first I’ve heard of a crash on those me 3X route so have done well so far.
That Busy Bee Route was a good route to be honest going down past the hospital to George’s Rd in Kemp Town
Those little buses and single deckers were great.
