Man racially abuses bus passenger in Brighton

A man is due in court today (Tuesday 13 October) charged with a sex attack in Brighton on Friday.

Sussex Police said: “A man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Cheapside, near London Road, Brighton, in the early hours of Friday 9 October.

“It was reported the man approached a 20-year-old woman whom he had been walking behind for some distance and then sexually assaulted her.

“He was stopped by a member of the public and then ran off.

“Following a fast-paced investigation a man was arrested and taken into custody on Sunday 11 October.

“Alex Ogden, 30, of no fixed address, has been charged with sexual assault and assault with intent to commit a sexual offence on Friday 9 October, possession of a bladed article in a public place on Sunday 11 October and failing to comply with a notification requirement from Saturday 10 October to Monday 12 October.

“He has been remanded in custody to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 13 October.”

Detective Inspector Caroline Jeffery said: “This has been a fast-paced investigation, with the suspect identified through thorough investigation work and a public appeal for information.

“We commend the bravery of the victim who we continue to support with specialist officers. We also thank those who came forward with information to assist police.

“We take every report of sexual offending seriously and are committed to doing all we can to protect the public, support victims and apprehend those found responsible.”

Sussex Police added: “If you have any information that could assist the investigation, please contact police online or phone 101, quoting Operation Toronto.”
