Brighton driver pays high price for ignoring ticket

A Brighton medical student lured a former friend to his death six months after he tried to rape her, a jury was told today (Tuesday 6 December).

Mundill Mahil, 20, a second-year student at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, is being tried at the Old Bailey in London for the murder of 21-year-old Gagandip Singh.

She asked Mr Singh to her flat in Brighton late one night at the end of February.

But Harvinder Shoker, 20, also known as Ravi Shoker, who was a rival for Mahil’s affections, was waiting there for him with another man, Darren Peters, also 20.

The prosecutor, Aftab Jafferjee, said that the pair – described by Mahil as her “gangster friends” – attacked Mr Singh and wrapped his unconscious body in Mahil’s duvet.

They dumped his body in the boot of his sister’s blue Mercedes car and drove it to London before dousing it with petrol and setting it alight.

A passing police patrol spotted the burning car in a lane in Blackheath. Mr Singh was dead.

Mr Jafferjee told the jury that Mr Singh helped run his family’s packing business after his father was murdered in India in 2009 and had started Sikh TV.

He had enjoyed a friendship with Mahil who had provided emotional support after his father’s death.

But she became angry with him in August last year when he got into her bed and tried to have sex with her.

Mr Singh bombarded Mahil with phone calls and text messages afterwards.

Mr Jafferjee said that Mahil was having none of it but became overwrought by his efforts to see her, culminating in her fatal invitation to him.

Mahil, of Maidstone Road in Chatham, Kent, Shoker, of Charlton Park Lane in Greenwich, and Peters, of Shooters Hill Road in Blackheath, all deny murder.

The trial continues.
