A 35-year-old man died after a stolen car crashed in Brighton while being chased by police.
Two men from Brighton, who were also in the stolen car, were injured.
Sussex Police said that the incident had been reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
The dead man, who is thought to come from Liverpool, died at the scene of the crash.
He was in a stolen Mazda MX5 which hit railings in Mill Road, Brighton, at about 11pm last night (Saturday 14 January).
Sussex Police said that “the stolen car made off at speed when it passed a stationary police patrol car” near Mill Road.
A statement said: “The patrol car then followed the Mazda for a few seconds before it unfortunately collided with railings which resulted in the 35-year-old man sadly receiving fatal injuries.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Two other occupants also in their thirties, from Brighton, were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.
“One remains in hospital and the other has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and (causing) death by dangerous driving.”
Chief Inspector Natalie Moloney, from Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation to try to establish the exact circumstances that led up to this fatal collision.
“Officers are still in the process of trying to trace the deceased’s next of kin.”
