Protesters block A27 between Falmer and Lewes

Commuters from Brighton and Hove delayed by floods and M25 closure

Protesters have blocked the A27 at Falmer in a rush-hour demo, according to traffic reports at 6pm this evening (Friday 13 August).

Highways chiefs said: “A27 Eastbound blocked, queueing traffic due to demonstration from B2123 The Drove (Falmer / Rottingdean Junction) to A277 Brighton Road (Ashcombe Roundabout).”

Shortly afterwards the BBC said that the road was blocked towards the Ashcombe Roundabout.

At about 6.30pm it was reported that the demo was over and the congestion easing.

Highways chiefs said: “Road cleared and traffic easing, demonstration over on A27 Eastbound from B2123 The Drove (Falmer / Rottingdean Junction, Falmer) to A277 Brighton Road (Ashcombe Roundabout, Lewes).

“Sensors suggest the road is now clear.”

It was not clear, however, what the protest was about and who was behind it.

Don’t know what it was about but happy to guess the utter incompetence of the council at doing their job. You can elect councillors but who appoints the utter buffoons to the traffic department?

What a load of poorly researched rubbish. It was a line of people standing on the pavement with placards. The traffic was slowing down for the lights at the roundabout as it always does. Unbelievable and they wonder why people question the media!

The traffic sensors were showing red at the time, suggesting the traffic either wasn’t moving or was going very slowly. What was it Gertrude said in Hamlet as she watched the play within the play about protesting too much?!? It’s a line she could so easily end up over-using around this place!

Perhaps the protesters did not know themselves what they were protesting about. Another week, another protest.
