New year parties could be covid ‘super-spreader’ events, warns Brighton and Hove health chief

The rate of new coronavirus cases in Brighton and Hove remains among the highest in England, according to figures published by Public Health England.

In the seven days to Monday 9 August there were 1,339 new cases in Brighton and Hove – up from 1,324 in the previous seven days period to Monday 2 August.

This equated to a rate of 459 new cases for every 100,000 people, up from 454 the previous week.

Only seven districts out of 315 in England recorded a higher rate in the week to Monday 9 August.

The number of patients in the Royal Sussex County Hospital with covid-19 has risen to 22, with six of those in intensive care or high dependency beds.

At least one child with covid – but fewer than six – is in the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital with the virus.

The number of people to have died with covid-19 mentioned on their death certificate remained at 479.

The vaccination rate in Brighton and Hove remained below average although the area has a higher proportion of young people than many other areas. Most older people are fully vaccinated.
