Owner ordered to repair neglected Brighton building

The owner of a neglected building in the heart of Brighton has been ordered to carry out repairs.

Sergios Papadopoulos has been told to improve the condition and appearance of 26 Richmond Place in the Valley Gardens Conservation Area, according to Brighton and Hove City Council.

He has failed to respond to requests so the council’s planning enforcement officers said that they had been left with no choice but to take legal action.

They said that the building had been neglected over a number of years and was now in a considerable state of disrepair.

The appearance of the building was also said to be having a negative impact on neighbouring properties which are generally well maintained.

Enforcement officers have issued what is known as a section 215 notice.

It requires Mr Papadopoulos to carry out work to the western side of the property. He must

Wash down and repaint the first and second floor levels

Repair and make good all the windows and woodwork at first and second floor levels

Repaint all external timberwork including window frames and soffits at first and second floor levels

Re-render and make good the bay window at first floor level

Clear gutters, downpipes and all vegetation

Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, chairman of the council’s planning committee, said: “A badly maintained and untidy property can have a detrimental effect on the whole neighbourhood and when quality of life of neighbours is affected we have a duty to take appropriate action.

“Fortunately most of these cases are quickly rectified and we are always happy to advise and support residents in getting work done, but ignoring the issue won’t make it go away.”

He added that action was being taken against other properties along Richmond Place which are in a similar state of disrepair.

The amenity notice comes into effect on Thursday 1 March and gives the owner six months to comply.

Is it 26 Richmond Place, near St Peters Church, because google maps suggest its a shop front, so I can’t really see the urgency? No garden even.
