A second-half goal by Pascal Gross propelled Albion to second in the Premier League and level on points with champions Manchester City.

Albion led the world’s greatest league outright for a short while during the afternoon as City came from behind before overcoming Crystal Palace.

But three points at home to Leeds mean that the Seagulls have not lost in their past nine Premier League matches, the club’s record unbeaten run in the top flight.

Leandro Trossard had a number of chances in the first half but couldn’t seem to get the ball on the right foot, Leeds keeper often opting to punch instead of gathering the ball.

Adam Webster had a great chance to put Albion ahead but his close range header went wide.

Joel Veltman was winning his hard fought personal battle with Leeds Jack Harrison and Albion were frequently escaping Leeds press which cost the visitors three first half yellow cards.

Albion looked livelier in the second half and Solly March spurned a great chance when put clean through  by Pascal Gross after good work by Caicedo, but March took the ball to far into the area and Meislier was able to parry effectively and the chance was gone.

Albion went ahead after fantastic approach play from Trossard and Danny Welbeck , Pascal Gross receiving the ball and slotting past Meislier to put Albion in front. The players and fans had to endure a VAR check against Welbeck possibly being offside before the goal was confirmed.

Despite a reasonable Leeds resurgence Albion held on as Robert Sanchez made several good takes from Leeds crosses.

Koaru Mitoma had another brief cameo where he not only showed great skill and pace but also tenacity .

At the end and 25 years on from  Hereford and after Arsenal’s win against Fulham, Albion DROPPED to third in the English Premier League.

The Seagulls next take on Fulham in the Premier League at Craven Cottage next Tuesday 30th August.
