A thief has stolen an electric cargo bike worth more than £5,000 from a street in Hove, Sussex Police said.

The force has issued an appeal for information from the public about the theft which happened in January.

The ebike – a blue Tern GSD long-tail electric cargo bike – costs about £5,400 when new.

Sussex Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses following the theft of a high-value electric bike in Hove.

“The ebike was secured to railings on Fourth Avenue when it was taken some time between Monday 9 January and 2pm on Wednesday 11 January.

“It is a Tern GSD long-tail electric cargo bike with small wheels and a front rack with a black crate strapped to it.

“It is mostly bright, pale blue but its handlebars and saddle are black.

“Anyone who sees a bike matching this description or who witnessed any suspicious behaviour around the time of the theft is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1016 of 11/01.”

Bikes get stolen every day in Brighton and Hove, so why the sudden interest here?
Normally, all you get from the police is a crime number so that you can claim on your insurance.

Sadly, I didn’t have insurance when my last bike was stolen, and I stupidly assumed locking it up in a busy spot and with two high security locks would keep it safe, but no.

Let’s hope they get this one back – but the chances are that a high value bike will be taken 100s of miles away before being sold on. It’s organised crime nowadays.

I ride a tatty old bike. Nobody seems to want to pinch it..

You can’t leave your ebike for two days and expect it to still be there when you return. I worry when I leave mine for just half an hour.

Why are the new Beryl Bikes – costing £13m to the local taxpayer – not bolted to anything secure and why do they fall over when there’s a gust of wind? Surely the taxpayer’s ‘investment’ needs to be protected.

Because they have built in trackers of course. Also nobody would want to buy them.

Do the trackers stop them falling over in a gust of wind?

Same here. Although mine secretly rides like a dream.

5k bike with no tracking, sounds like an idiot
