The Deputy Prime Minister is expected to visit two Brighton schools tomorrow (Tuesday 25 September).

Nick Clegg is believed to have arranged a visit to the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, the first academy school in Brighton and Hove.

The Liberal Democrat leader will be met by principal Phil Hogg who will show him around the school where results have improved sharply over the past two years.

The academy replaced the old Falmer High School and has placed a stronger emphasis on academic achievement.

In August 41 per cent of pupils achieved five GCSEs including maths and English with grades from A* to C compared with 22 per cent two years ago.

Phil Hogg is due to retire at the end of the current academic year.

Mr Clegg is also expected to visit the newly opened Brighton and Hove Bilingual Primary School which is based temporarily at the BACA site.

The Reception and Year 1 children are being taught in English and Spanish using a method known as immersion.

The school is the first state-funded fully bilingual primary school in the country and Mr Clegg is expected to be accompanied on his visit by his Spanish wife, Miriam Gonzalez Durantez.

Whilst full credit must be given to the pupils and teachers who achieved these impressive GCSE. results, it must be remembered that much of this achievement and credit was due to the past teachers and the previous school, before the school became an academy. The academy has only had these pupils for a year.

The proof of the pudding will be when the academy has taught those pupils from age 11 to 16 and then they produce their GCSE. results. Having run for a year now it is only in four years time, when those pupils reach 16 will we be able to guage the difference the academy has made to the pupils!
