Brighton and Hove prepares to remember

At least five services of remembrance have been planned for Brighton and Hove this weekend.

The main parade and service in Brighton will take place at the War Memorial in Old Steine on Remebrance Sunday, which this year fall on Armistice Day (Sunday 11 November).

The parade is due to set off from Madeira Drive to the War Memorial at 10.45am.

A two-minute silence will be observed at the War Memorial at 11am, followed by a short ceremony, laying of wreaths and a march past.

People are asked to arrive at the Old Steine by 10.45am. Early weather forecasts suggest a crisp clear morning after a rainy Saturday.

At 11am a maroon will be sounded on the seafront to mark the traditional two-minute silence. The sound of a maroon flare is traditionally used to summon lifeboat crews. It will sound again two minutes later to mark the end of the silence.

The annual parade in Portslade is due to set off from the Town Hall in Victoria Road at 10.20am. It should arrive at the Easthill Park Memorial at 10.50am for a ceremony and laying of wreaths at 11am.

In Hove Cemetery in Old Shoreham Road a short wreath-laying ceremony will take place first at the South Gate Memorial at 11am. The ceremony will be repeated at the North Gate Memorial but there will not be a service.

The main parade in Hove sets off from Hove Town Hall at 2.15pm and heads along Church Road to the War Memorial in Grand Avenue for a wreath-laying ceremony at 2.30pm.

The parade will then head to All Saints Church for a full Service of Remembrance at 3pm.

And at 4.25pm the Brighton and Hove branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women will also hold a service of remembrance. It is taking place at the Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation in New Church Road, Hove.

On Saturday cadets and Rotary Club members will be turning out to support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

One local organiser, Liz Driscoll and her husband Nigel, have been enjoying the help of staff from Lloyds TSB in Hove through the Day to Make a Difference scheme.

They have been supported by shoppers at the West Hove Sainsbury’s in Benfield Valley.
