A man from Brighton has been arrested for affray after Hove MP Mike Weatherley was chased by protesters at the Sussex University campus in Falmer.

Sussex Police said that the 24-year-old man was in custody this afternoon (Friday 23 November) and was being held on suspicion of affray.

His arrest follows a visit by Mr Weatherley to the campus to talk about how he helped to change the law on squatting.

Sussex Police said: “Just before 1.50pm on Wednesday 14 November police were called to the Silverstone Building in Arts Road on the University of Sussex campus at Falmer after a report of a disturbance.

“A large group of people were outside the building where Mr Weatherley was present.

“Officers took Mr Weatherly to safety in a police van.

“One of his team reported suffering a slight injury by a stone which had been thrown.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

How can he be so clueless? Obviously so removed from many voter’s lives that he doesn’t realise what a tinderbox it is out here.

The writing is on the wall, read it and weep blue boy.

Baiting both travellers and squatters (the anti-squatter law he fashioned not included as ‘baiting’) was A Very Bad Idea and not what I expect of my MP. Too much sneering and not enough quietly getting-on-with-it humility brought this on his own head, aided and abetted by Robert Nemeth’s contemptuous tweetings with squatters and pro-squatters and others.

However rude they might have been, it is not acceptable for people in office or their employees to do the same.
