Up to 5cm rain and thunderstorms could hit Brighton and Hove tomorrow night, Met Office warns

A Met Office weather warning covering Brighton and Hove today (Thursday 26 October) has been lifted.

The official forecaster issued a yellow rain warning yesterday, covering from 4am until noon today, but the immediate outlook is drier than previously anticipated.

Heavy rain is coming, though, with a week’s worth of rain due to fall in just one day over a wet weekend.

More than a third of an inch of rain – or 9mm – has been forecast for tomorrow, with more than an inch expected on Saturday.

The average October rainfall in Brighton and Hove is about 4in – or 100mm – making it typically the second wettest month of the year, behind November.

Almost an inch of rain has been forecast for Sunday, with lighter showers on Monday before petering out late on Tuesday morning.

The wind is expected to pick up on Saturday evening, and overnight wind speeds could reach about 40mph, with more stormy conditions on Sunday and possibly thunder.

According to Southern Water, the long-term average annual rainfall for the wider region is almost 31in – or 782.2mm.

But from September last year to August this year, 43in of rain – or 1,091.9mm – almost 1.1 metres has fallen.
