Brighton and Hove Albion won with consummate ease again at Bramall Lane the second time in less than a month.
Facundo Buonanote opened the scoring for Albion after 20 minutes although the Sheffield United defence did a good job of trying to keep the effort out.
Albion had gained the ascendency after Mason Holgate scythed down Kaoru Mitoma. Initially, referee Stuart Attwell gave Holgate a yellow card but after a VAR intervention it became a red.and
On 24 minutes, a great ball from Pascal Gross gave Mitoma a chance but Wes Foderingham blocked it. Danny Welbeck pounced on the rebound to fired home to double Albion’s lead.
Just before the break, the Blades bundled the ball home from a corner. Ben Osborn struck from close range. But the VAR review that followed ruled it out for offside.
Albion treated the second half like a training exercise. Sheffield United offered very little, with Bart Verbruggen in goal this week hardly troubled.
The Seagulls finally got their third after Mitoma continued to torment Osborn and swung in a cross which United defender Jack Robinson sliced into his own net.
Albion completed their record-breaking rout with two goals from AFCON champion Simon Adringa. The first came from a Gross assist that looped into the net with Evan Ferguson looking to get a cheeky touch but failing.
The second again came from a superb Gross cross and was met with a brilliant flick by Adringa for 5-0.
Albion take on relegation-threatened Everton at the Amex next Saturday buoyed by five goals that represent Albion’s biggest ever away top-flight win and the most goals scored in an away top-flight fixture.
